Livorno ends Milan's run
Sunday, September 24, 2006
Penalised giants AC Milan drew 0-0 away to Livorno in the Italian Serie A football tournament, ending a three-game winning run through which they had overcome a point-penalty received in a match-fixing trial.
In the ninth minute, Ricardo Oliveira, Milan's new arrival from Spanish side Real Betis, had the first real chance in a rather dull first half, but had his shot saved by keeper Marco Amelia.
A firmer but slightly high drive came in the 26th minute from Kaka, one of five Brazilian players donning the Devils' red-black jersey during the match Saturday.
Livorno had a single chance in the first half through their hometown captain Cristiano Lucarelli, whose effort posed no threat for Dida.
The Brazilian international seemed beaten on the hour but was saved by the bar when midfielder Stefano Morrone fired a smashing shot against the woodwork.
Oliveira had a last chance with few minutes left when an Andrea Pirlo long ball set him free before Amelia, who managed a prodigious save on the Brazilian's feet.
The draw pushed Livorno on to five points from four games, level with promoted Atalanta and Tuscany minnows Empoli.
Milan have two points despite the previous wins due to an eight-point penalty.
Newcomers Catania and Messina, two sides from Sicily like Palermo drew 2-2 in a high-tension regional derby that both sides closed with 10 men.
Catania's forward Giuseppe Mascara was given marching orders in the 58th minute for taking off his jersey after levelling Sergio Floccari's opener on 32 minutes.
After just three minutes, a header from Jonatha Spinesi completed Catania's reversal, but Messina managed to score again through Chilean Nicolas Cordova in the 64th minute.
The two sides drew also on dismissed players five minutes later as Messina defender Mark Iuliano received a second booking.
Messina lie now second on eight points, while Catania trail on five.
