Thursday, November 24, 2006

Julio Cesar scored a first-half goal Tuesday to give AEK Athens a 1-0 win over AC Milan in Group H of the Champions League.

The Brazilian scored in the 32nd minute off a curling free kick from outside the area, sending goalkeeper Dida the wrong way.

"I'm really happy to help my team win ... we all feel great," Cesar said. "The fans were a huge help. We felt we could beat anybody."

Tuesday's result, combined with Lille's 2-2 draw against Anderlecht, moved AEK into second place with seven points, one ahead of Lille and three behind Milan. Anderlecht has three points in last place.

"It's a great night for Greek football and for AEK fans. This was a magnificent victory and a great confidence booster for us," AEK coach Lorenzo Serra Ferrer said. "The victory has made a name for AEK around the world. It's great."

Milan's best opportunity came in the 53rd when a low shot by Filippo Inzaghi hit the bar.

The Greeks replied in the 62nd when a shot by Cesar forced Dida to make a one-handed save, sending the ball corner. The Brazil goalkeeper was injured in the attempt, forcing coach Carlo Ancelotti to replace him with Zeljiko Kalac.

In the last 15 minutes, the Italians made desperate attacks to level but the Greek defense resisted well.
