Milan held by Fiorentina Tuesday, September 04, 2007
Fiorentina took home a precious 1-1 draw from European champions AC Milan in a game that closed the second round of the Italian Serie A football league.
The tie was played Monday to allow Milan an extra day to recover after winning 3-1 the Super Cup match against Sevilla in Monaco Friday.
In the first home affair of the season, though, Milan had a rough time against the Tuscany guests, who now lie next to them on four points.
Atalanta, holders Inter Milan and Sampdoria also have four points, two adrift of leaders Juventus and AS Roma.
A spot kick converted by Brazil star Kaka put Milan ahead on 27 minutes shortly after Alberto Gilardino's close-range effort was brilliantly deflected by Fiorentina's French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey.
The visitors had come close through Giampaolo Pazzini, who on 20 minutes fired a feeble shot, but missed by a hairsbreadth two minutes later nodding a cross from Tomas Ujfalusi.
After firing home from the spot kick awarded for the flooring of Massimo Ambrosini, Kaka aimed a wide shot before Pazzini squandered easy chances twice, shooting straight to Milan goalkeeper Dida.
The hosts seemed to control the remainder of the game, but were stunned on 56 minutes as Adrian Mutu headed home a precise cross from Alberto Santana, who deftly leapt past Alessandro Nesta on the left flank.
Mutu headed wide on 68 minutes and Milan's substitute veteran Filippo Inzaghi two minutes later missed an even easier chance misfiring before Frey.
A final occasion went begging for Fiorentina with nine minutes left as Swiss substitute Zdravko Kuzmanovic fired against the post before the gaping goal.
