Gilardino strike puts Milan sixth
Thursday, January 31, 2008
An Alberto Gilardino header on 18 minutes was enough to see Milan come away from Reggio Calabria with all three points after beating Reggina 1-0 at the Stadio Granillo.
Ronaldo was rested for this game and so Gilardino partnered Brazilian sensation Alexandre Pato up front. Reggina are currently fighting a relegation battle down at the foot of Serie A where as Milan are chasing Champions League qualification, so it is no surprise then that the Rossoneri dominated the game from start to finish.
A perfect cross from Andrea Pirlo was met by Gilardino who headed the ball past Campagnolo to give his side the lead. Milan created a number of fine chances but they were all spurned as Pato and Emerson did not have a good night in front of goal.
Pirlo almost doubled the Rossoneri’s lead in the second half, but his brilliant free kick came crashing back off the Reggina cross bar. Reggina did not manage to find an answer as Milan held on for all three points.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men now move up to fifth in Serie A, seven points behind Fiorentina who occupy the last Champions League place. However Milan have still got a game in hand.
